Mike’s 1984 Honda XL200R is currently on the lift, and it has a hell of a history. This machine belonged to his late father, a geologist who treated the bike like a piece of heavy surveying equipment. He bolted a custom box to the back rack and rode this thumper deep into the woods to haul out rocks and core samples. It is a genuine survivor that was used exactly as Honda intended, and we are working to get it back on the dirt for Mike.

But the bike is fighting a completely clogged fuel system, and it serves as a hard warning for anyone trying to cut corners on vintage fuel tanks.
Before Mike's dad passed away, the original tank started getting rusty. Instead of having it professionally stripped and sealed, it got a cheap, DIY liquid tank liner applied in a home garage.

Here is the mechanical reality of doing this yourself. DIY tank liners—especially cheap store-bought sealers like KREEM—almost always fail. If the chemical prep isn't 100% perfect, modern ethanol fuel gets underneath the liner. It breaks the sealant down, turning it into a rubbery, peeling skin that breaks off in sticky, white flakes. That garbage bypasses the petcock screen, melts in the carburetor float bowl, and completely welds the brass pilot jet shut.

Scraping a failed, half-melted liner out of an old steel tank without destroying the thin metal is nearly impossible. Because of a cheap quick-fix, this original tank is completely compromised, and we are forced to replace it entirely.
If you own a vintage machine, listen closely: sourcing a clean, rust-free, original tank for an '84 XL200R is a nightmare. If your vintage steel tank has pinholes or heavy rust, pay a professional to do it right, or find a clean replacement. A $30 tank sealing kit will inevitably fail, ruin your carburetor, and force you to hunt down a replacement tank you can't find.
